Location and architecture

Situated right in the centre of the historic Rome in the Quirinale district, the square owes its name to its position. Lying at the meeting point of three streets (Trivie ). Via de Murrate, Via del Levatore, and Via Poli, it is called Piazza di Trevi or the square upon three streets. The piazza is within walking distance from Piazza Navona and Spanish steps. For centuries it has been a common practice among tourists to throw a coin with their right hand and over their right shoulder into the water of the fountain, believing this act will make their next visit to the eternal city sure. If one throws two coins, he will surely fall in love with a beautiful girl of Rome (Or a handsome boy) whereas throwing three coins in the fountain water makes it sure that he or she will marry that girl or boy in Rome. Thousands of coins lie in the bottom of the fountain water to day. This tradition has made the piazza Trevi one of the most romantic places in the world.

The most  famous fountain in the world

The Trevi Fountain is really a masterwork of sculpture and, at the same time, of architecture. There are two large columns of Corinthian order making an arch having a large riche which stands triumphal for the palace of Neptune--- the God of the sea. To the left of Neptune, a statue symbolizes abundance; to its right side, another statue denotes Salubrity. There are several bas-reliefs above these sculptures. They include the one showing Agrippa--- the general that gave the aqueduct its name. The water flowing at the bottom of the fountain depicts the sea.

The fountain has gained universal fame due to Federico Felini’s film: “La Dolce Vita“, showing Anita Ekberg walking in fountain water at night and the Jean Negulesco’s romantic film: "Three Coins In The Fountain", starring Clifton Webb and Dorothy Mc Guire.
